Smokefree in Liverpool
The message that smoking is bad for you is all well and good, but many people in Liverpool struggle with nicotine addiction even though they know they are risking their health and the health of others.
What we know about smoking in Liverpool
28.7% of Liverpool adults smoke and over 100 people a year in the city die just from inhaling second hand smoke.
Most people know that smoking can cause lung cancer and other chronic diseases but it can also contribute to many other illnesses. These include heart and circulation diseases such as a stroke, heart attacks and angina.
Cigarette smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals, many of these are highly toxic and over 60 of them cause cancer. The good news is that your body will begin to repair itself as soon as you stop smoking and you’ll go on feeling the health benefits for the rest of your life.
What you can do
If you are a smoker and want to quit smoking, there is plenty of free help available in Liverpool. You need to plan how you are going to quit, you need to keep trying and most of all you should seek further information, advice and support.
If you are a non-smoker but have a relative, friend or colleague who you are supporting to quit then you can help by trying to see the smoker’s point of view. In no way scold, nag or preach – remember they are in charge and this is their lifestyle change. But help them celebrate quitting and encourage them to seek the help outlined in this website.
When you go smokefree, you are up to four times more likely to succeed if you use NHS support and stop smoking aids such as patches or gum to manage your cravings.
