Life expectancy at birth has risen steadily over the last fifteen years as the proportion of deaths due to cancer, heart attacks and strokes has fallen significantly.
According to the Department of Health's report on life expectancy and morality in England, girls born today can expect to live an average of 82 years, with boys living until 78.
Children born today will live two years longer than children born ten years ago.
Meanwhile, the proportion of people under 75 dying from cancer each year has dropped by 15 per cent over the last decade.
The proportion of deaths due to heart attacks and strokes has dropped by 41 per cent over the same period.
