Liverpool operates an extensive transport network focussed on road and public transport access to the city but also as a port with the sea and river playing a part.

The car is one of the most utilised forms of transport but the emphasis in the city is to reduce car use and also in urban areas to control traffic speed. Liverpool has excellent public transport provision and also many people make use of other ways to travel such as using a bike or walking.
As part of our lifestyle and well being it is important that we all make the right transport choices, for example walking or cycling on shorter journeys. It is also important that we make the best use of public transport and, if we do own one, use cars only when appropriate.
Driving
If you have access to a car then you will know the freedom of choice and mobility that it can bring but there are also other considerations in using a car such as the high cost, the environmental consequences, congestion and road safety. Parking is controlled throughout our neighbourhood areas and you should plan carefully where you park keeping in mind that restrictions apply, there may be safety considerations and sometimes a cost associated.
Cycling
Cycling is the most efficient form of transport for short journeys. It’s fun, better for the environment and healthy. Cycling is suitable for people with differing needs using adapted bicycles and it is an activity that is good for your heart.

Public Transport
Liverpool benefits from a high quality public transport system. There are a variety of bus companies operating routes around the city. Merseytravel provides bus services linking communities with hospitals, schools and other vital social outlets at times when bus companies find it unprofitable.
There are also special services such as Joblink and Dial-a-Link bus services, helping people get to jobs and training. Trains provide rapid access to the city centre with Mainline services running from Liverpool Lime Street and the ultra modern Merseyrail Electrics providing linking connection.
The Merseyside Journey Planner will help you plan your journey from walking to car to bus to train. You can also find details of all public transport routes and times at this address. www.merseytravel.gov.uk

Walking
If it possible then choose to walk when you can perhaps with your children on the way to school or when going to work, or popping to the shops.
If you take 10,000 steps a day it is one of the best ways to stay fit and healthy.
If you live in Liverpool and you would like a pedometer to see how far you walk each day then you can contact
